If snacks are meant to curb our appetite and stabilize blood sugar between meals, then why do we find ourselves raiding the vending machine at snack time? Even worse right now for the holidays is the overabundance of holiday treats available for our snacking pleasure. So, how do we keep all of this unconscious noshing under control? First, we should be mindful of how much and how often we are eating. Many people find keeping a food journal helps with accountability. Doesn’t have to be very detailed, simply writing down the time and what you ate, “2:00 pm crackers” is enough. Knowing you need to write down what you are eating may help you second guess if you are hungry and if you are making a wise food choice. Another way to keep snacking in check is to set a limit of three snacks daily and to keep them less than 150 calories each. Sure, the supermarket is full of “100 calorie” snack options, but due to their lack of fiber and protein, many of these may leave you wanting more, rather than leaving you satisfied. Keeping fresh fruit and vegetables in plain view in lieu of holiday goodies will also help cut out some of those unnecessary calories.
Snacks can actually help to achieve a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Pairing fruits or vegetables with lean protein or low fat dairy can help meet some of our nutritional goals such as five-a-day fruits and vegetables and three servings daily of low fat dairy (or comparable calcium sources). Below you will find a list of healthful snack options to get you started:

Apple slices with almond or peanut butter or even a low fat cheese
Vegetables and hummus, try sugar snap peas, carrots and sweet bell peppers
Small handful of raw nuts
Strawberries and fat-free yogurt
Cottage cheese and fruit
Walnuts or almonds with raisins or dried cranberries (keep the total portion to a handful)
Fruit smoothie made with fat free milk, fat free yogurt and fresh/frozen fruit
Pear slices with a slice of turkey and reduced fat cheddar cheese
½ a sandwich on high fiber bread with banana slices and chocolate hazelnut spreadstrollerfitstpetehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12007668889679896974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7319651664971519844.post-41313642355290447092011-12-14T03:52:00.000-08:002011-12-14T03:54:15.980-08:00Adding Protein = Building Muscle

When we start a new health routine, we often think we need more protein, but is this really the case? Protein is vital for building and maintaining muscle, blood, skin, hair, nails and internal organs as well as provide enzymes to regulate bodily functions and transport nutrients, oxygen and waste throughout the body.

Is there such a thing as too much protein? Yes there is. Despite all the products on the grocery store shelves promoting their protein content, we typically eat more than we need. Too much protein contributes to excessive caloric intake, resulting in weight gain. Many high protein foods are also high in saturated fat and cholesterol as well, which will contribute to elevated blood cholesterol levels and increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.

So how much do we need? You guessed it, another math equation. The average healthy adult needs around 0.3-0.4 grams per pound. That means a person weighing 150 pounds needs roughly 50-60 grams of protein per day. Children need roughly 0.7-1 grams of protein per pound depending on age. The younger the child, the more protein is needed due to their fast rate of growth. If you want to know how many grams you or your child needs specifically, ask your registered dietitian!

Below you will find a chart of common foods and the corresponding grams of protein based on serving size.

You may notice it is not difficult to eat your required grams of protein daily. If you have an egg at breakfast, three servings of dairy throughout the day and three ounces meat/poultry/fish at dinner, you’re covered (and that’s not including the additional grams you receive from all the vegetables and whole grains you are eating daily!).strollerfitstpetehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12007668889679896974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7319651664971519844.post-51993140690448194942011-12-06T03:39:00.000-08:002013-03-11T17:00:08.152-07:00What's Fiber Got To Do With It?

Okay Boot Campers, we have all heard about the importance of calcium for strong teeth and bones, but did you know that is only the tip of the iceberg? We need calcium for normal blood clotting, maintaining a normal blood pressure, nerve transmission, enzymes and hormones to regulate digestion, fat and energy metabolism as well as the production of saliva. Calcium aids in the transport of nutrients and other substances across cell membranes. It works with magnesium in muscle contraction and it is very important to have a balance between calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium to maintain muscle tone. Possible benefits of calcium include protection from colon cancer, lowering blood cholesterol as well as fat metabolism and weight loss.

It’s amazing we absorb any! Good news, we absorb more in times of great need, such as lactation and pregnancy.

A diet high in protein helps to increase absorption and so does the presence of lactose. An acidic environment and vitamin D are also important. The best sources in our diet are from dairy products due to the high calcium content, presence of lactose (milk sugar) and vitamin D. Another great source we don’t think of often is canned fish with the bones. Other good sources include enriched soy products, enriched almond/coconut/rice milk, dark-green leafy vegetables, broccoli, beans and peas.

How much calcium do we need? All women between 19 and 50 years of age need 1000 mg of calcium daily. This includes both pregnant and/or lactating women. Three to four servings of high calcium foods daily meets our needs. Take a look at the nutrition facts panel on your food. The calcium is listed at the bottom as a percentage. This percentage is based on 1000 mg of calcium. Perfect! So if it says 30%, this is 300 of your daily 1000 mg.
strollerfitstpetehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12007668889679896974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7319651664971519844.post-62786221546408013682011-11-08T05:12:00.000-08:002011-11-08T05:12:40.844-08:00What's for Breakfast, Mom?

A local favorite beach, Ft. DeSoto, was just named the #1 Family Friendly Beach by Parents Magazine. It will certainly be a hotspot this weekend.

A day in the sun and on the sand is a great time to play some family beach games. After everyone has had a chance to swim and build a sand castle, introduce the whole family something new and different to do by trying one of these fun activities. These activities can be played with toddlers, school age kids and adults, too.

Some beach games require a few pieces of equipment, but these are fun & simple to play. Having a "winner" isn't necessary because, after all, everyone who gets to spend a fun day at the beach is a winner.

Shell Sort — Sorting shells is a fun way to start a new collection and also teach the little ones a thing or two. Have each child run up and down the beach gathering as many different kinds of shells as they can. Draw a grid in the sand and have them sort the shells into different categories; the kids can sort them by color, size or type. Make it even more interesting by combining two elements; keeping each large white shell together and each small brown shell together.

Beach Ball Balancing Act — This beach ball game is fun for all ages and is easy to play. You need one inflatable beach ball for every team of two players. The players try to carry the ball across a finish line without using their hands. The ball can be balance between their heads, pressed between their backs while walking backwards or set between their stomachs and crab-walked to the end.

Family Beach Boot Camp — No, you don't have to wear camo and have a drill sargent yell at you...but you can have some fun doing a few partner exercises together. Try partner squats - face your partner and hold both hands with each other. Slowly lower down, bending your knees and keeping your weight over your heels. Stand back up, keeping your shoulders up tall. Repeat for 10 reps. Jog with your partner 10 yards down the beach, get down and give me 20! Just kidding...10 partner push ups coming up. Face your partner both in push up position, on toes or knees. Complete one push up, then give your partner a high five with your right hand to their left hand. Finish up with 9 more push ups.

Whatever you choose to do, remember little segments of activity can add up to your Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended 150 minutes a week. Try 10 minutes of vigorous activity, 3 times a day, 5 days a week. Mix up your activities and you will stay interested and keep moving!strollerfitstpetehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12007668889679896974noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7319651664971519844.post-39545522180476068512011-05-15T19:56:00.000-07:002011-05-15T19:56:32.498-07:00My New Life - Kimi's Story

A year ago lots of things came together for me all at once. Bad things. I went shopping at Old Navy and could not find anything in my size. The scale kept creeping up and up and I was approaching a number that I was definitely not happy about. Let's just say the first digit rhymed with poo. I could not bend down to pick up a toy without getting out of breath. Campbell's teacher gave me a picture she had taken of Campbell and I at some school event and I was disgusted by the image. I did not have the energy to play with the kids the way they wanted me to play. Chuck went on a business trip to Singapore that was supposed to be around 10 days and turned into more than 3 weeks. One morning Kenyon and I went to North Shore playground. I saw a bunch of moms with strollers jog by and leading the pack was my friend Christie. She's been the owner of Baby Boot Camp for 5 years or so, and I've known her that entire time through a mom's group, but had never tried a class before. She called out to me as they were running by "Hey, Kimi! How are you? You should come join us sometime!" and I thought to myself "You know, I really should".
So the next day I went. I was surprised by how great of a workout it was. I don't know what I expected it to be like, but it wasn't that. It was hard. In a good way. I have never been a regular exerciser, so it was probably extra hard for me. Kenyon and I both loved being outside and I loved not having to worry about the logistics of child care while exercising. I could just go and do it. So I did, and I kept doing it 2 or 3 times a week. I lost 10 pounds in the first month with no diet change. Real summer came and I kept at it. There were indoor classes offered, but Kenyon and I both preferred being outside, even in the 90 degree 100% humidity. Then Christie started a running group. I was not really interested since I've never run before and could barely run the short jogs we do in class. Another BBC teacher, Libby, told me I could totally do it, that it was different running without a stroller. The first night I went they were already doing 3 min run/1 min walk intervals. I told myself I would be happy if I could complete 3 intervals. I did 5 intervals, but I was hot and miserable and the slowest one there. I'm not sure why I went back a second time, but I did. And saw a tiny bit of improvement. That improvement got me to go back a third night, and pretty soon I was hooked and waking up at 5:30 on Saturday mornings (me! 5:30 AM!) to go running. Listen, if I can start running in July in Florida and keep up with it, anyone can! I am still the slowest one, but I am in love with it.
I am down a little over 20 pounds now (still with no diet change - need to work on that!) but how much better I feel mentally and physically cannot be measured in numbers. I have a confidence I don't think I've ever had. I ran a half marathon! I sleep better. I play with my girls the way they want me to play with them. I am a living example for them of how to take care of their bodies. There is nothing better than seeing them imitate the exercises they watch in BBC. I am so grateful to Christie for reaching out that morning, to Libby for pushing me to go running, and for Chuck for all the times he's taken on extra kid duty so I could go run. Thank you to all the BBC teachers and all my IrunMommies friends who always push me just by being faster!

My philosophy is pretty simple ... As an artist and a parent, I know how precious my photographs are to me. My goal is to provide you with a slice of photography magic that you, too, will hold dear.

I love images that are soulful and creative and that evoke emotion. My hope is that my photography will move people, and stir something inside.

I look for moments that are meaningful when I am photographing my own family and I look for those moments when I am photographing yours. It may be a big belly laugh; it may be a moment of quiet discovery; it may be that second right before or after a kiss that brings perfect clarity to your world.
Sheri Kendrick, owner of Enchanted Forest Photography, will be taking family and candid photos in Sunken Gardens from 10-11am and 12-1pm during the Mother Love Family Fitness Festival. Hooping is a powerful life improvement practice that affects a person’s spirit, health and well-being while simultaneously bringing happiness into the heart & soul.

Hoola Monsters, LLC’s humble beginnings included back yard hoop jams and hoop-making parties with friends. Before ‘performance’ was even a word in our vocabularies, we came together as a group of friends who shared a solid passion for the art of hoop dance. Now, three years later, we have grown leaps and bounds, adding new classes, new performers, and new products. In Spring of 2010, we launched a brand new line of specialty hoops, which will continue to be hand-made right here in the USA.

Hoola Monsters will be presenting a fun hoop demo at the Mother Love Family Fitness Festival at noon. They will be bringing hoops for everyone to try out - parents and kiddos!. There will also be information about their adult classes, performances, kids classes and birthday parties inside at the expo.strollerfitstpetehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12007668889679896974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7319651664971519844.post-49319551846446024212011-04-27T09:16:00.000-07:002011-04-27T09:16:55.602-07:00NYR Organic - All natural skincare, cosmetics and more

Our Philosophy
We're passionate about transforming people's lives, educating and empowering them on how to live more healthily through the power of nature.

• Hydration and eating right. Drinking water helps keep the skin hydrated and supple, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, maintaining a well-balanced diet, including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, is important too. These foods contain natural antioxidants which can benefit your skin as well as your overall health.

• Exercise. Regular exercise enhances blood flow, giving your skin a healthy glow. Exercise also can help reduce the production of stress-related hormones that may contribute to acne flare-ups. Indirect evidence shows that when you exercise, your level of stress diminishes. Reducing stress tends to quiet the adrenals. There is reduced hormone output, which helps control acne. Regular exercise also increases sweating, which in turn can unclog pores and have a positive effect on breakouts.

• Spending time with friends. Relaxing, laughing, connecting – all have a positive effect on our mind and body.

• Stress relief. One form of stress relief is getting regular massages. They help promote relaxation and increase blood circulation. Massage also exfoliates dead skin cells, which encourages cell regeneration. The result is healthier, better-looking skin.

• Adequate sleep. It seems we can never get enough! Sleep is essential for maintaining your metabolism, but it is also important for skin health. For example, sleep relaxes the facial muscles and that helps to smooth wrinkles and lines on your face. In addition, lack of sleep may alter the regulation of blood vessel tone and thus contribute to puffiness or bags under the eyes.
A pioneer in early childhood music and movement education, Music Together offers classes for children from birth through kindergarten, in which parents and caregivers actively participate.

All children are sounders and movers, and their natural aptitude for music blossoms in a sufficiently rich music environment. In fact, when given a supportive music environment, children learn to sing and dance as naturally as they learn to walk and talk.

How is this possible? Children learn differently than adults. They learn instinctively and constantly. They teach themselves through imitation and play, through being immersed in their environment, and through every interaction with adults and older children. The family-like setting of Music Together's mixed-age classes enables siblings to attend together, creating an ideal learning environment where infants, toddlers, and preschoolers can freely participate at their own levels.

You and Me & Music Together will be engaging and entertaining families in the Oak Pavilion at 11:30am during the Mother Love Family Fitness Festival. Miss Colleen will also be at the expo with class schedules and information about her current semester.strollerfitstpetehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12007668889679896974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7319651664971519844.post-21595811599578701982011-04-24T09:17:00.000-07:002011-04-24T09:17:31.207-07:00Smart Cookie Nutrition - Holistic support for mothers and their growing familiesWhen was the last time you talked with someone about your health and received the personal attention you deserve?
